Police: 17-year-old East Texas girl faked kidnapping after crash

CANTON, TX (KLTV) -

A 17-year-old East Texas girl took her mother's SUV without permission, wrecked it, and then told authorities that a kidnapper had forced her into the vehicle.

According to the Canton Police Department, officers responded to a two-vehicle rollover collision around 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday. The accident occurred on Farm-to-Market 2909 just east of State Highway 19, outside of Canton.

When officers arrived, Seniya Jones, of Canton, told authorities that she had been an occupant of one of the vehicles involved in the collision. Jones also told police that she had been forced into the vehicle, a Honda CRV, by a kidnapper who then crashed the SUV. She alleged that the kidnapper ran into the woods after the vehicle had crashed.

A multi-agency manhunt was then launched for the reported kidnapper. A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter was called in to assist with an aerial search of the wooded area. Canton PD launched an investigation and soon discovered inconsistencies in the teen's story that led authorities to believe that the kidnapping report was untrue.

Jones eventually admitted that she had fabricated the story because she had taken her mother's vehicle without permission. She also told authorities that she had been the driver at the time of the collision, and that she was the vehicle's only occupant. The search for the reported kidnapper was then called off.

The incident is being investigated by the Canton Police Department. As of Tuesday evening, Jones has not been charged.
