Flagstaff moves to discontinue chemical de-icing

Posted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AP) -

Councilors in Flagstaff have opted to discontinue the use of chemical de-icing agents on city streets this winter.

The Arizona Daily Sun reports that councilors voted Tuesday to use instead only volcanic cinders.

Councilors made the move officials say the salt-based agent has caused damage and death to the ponderosa pines near the city roads where the de-icing agent has been applied.

The city had been using a salt-based, chemical de-icer to melt snow and ice on city streets since 2007.

Flagstaff City Manager Kevin Burke said he doesn't see a problem implementing the change to all cinders for this upcoming winter season.
