PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Valley man was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Wednesday in connection with a 2011 online porn case in Surprise.

Luke Hinkley must also serve lifetime supervised probation.

Hinkley pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and three counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.

Hinkley was arrested on June 27, 2013 following a police interview at the Surprise Police Department.

The case dates back to Sept. 30, 2011, when a couple contacted police after they bought an external hard drive from Hinkley, who was their neighbor, officers said.

The couple told police when they went to clean up the hard drive, they saw a folder that contained hundreds of images of child pornography, police said.

Police served a search warrant at a home where Hinkley was living and police seized his computer tower. A search warrant was then obtained for a complete forensic exam of the hard drive.

The items were sent to the DPS computer lab and a report came back on June 17, 2013 that stated 81 images of child exploitation were discovered on the hard drive and 81 images were observed in the computer tower, police said.

Police said some of the images were of girls under the age of 5.

During a police interview, Hinkley admitted to being on the internet searching for pornographic images of "young girls" in an attempt to find images of girls ages 16 to 18, officers said.

He admitted to saving images on his external hard drive, the same hard drive that he later traded for drugs, police said.

He said he was looking at the inappropriate images in an attempt to figure out who was manufacturing them so he could report them to authorities, police said.
