BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -

An Ark-La-Tex man is putting his hobby of what he calls "tinkering" to use in hopes of preventing drivers from forgetting about children and leaving them in hot cars.

The recent news of 3-year-old Sariah Delafosse's death hit hard with Jimmy Broome, of Bossier City, but he is using the sadness to motivate him to do something about it, "it just breaks my heart to hear when a child dies over something so simple. It's just a device to remind the driver that a child is back there."

Broome along with many other people have the idea to design an alarm to alert the driver that a child is still in the car with them. There are numerous similar designs but Broome says his hobby of "tinkering" got him to thinking one day, "I figured why not put something in the baby's seat."

Broome is designing a car seat alarm that starts with a pad that is installed in the child's seat, "it has a weight sensor in it. what happens is, whenever the sensor closes, it sends a signal, which will be wired in. the wires will run down through here. they won't been seen or anything like that."

The wires will run into the front of the car to an alarm in the door and if there is a child in the seat when the driver opens the door, an alarm similar to a door alarm will sound. Broome wants to go a step farther in his design, in case anyone is so distracted that they can't hear the first alarm, "well after say 3 to 5 minutes, the car alarm will go off and it will bring attention to other people for them to check and see what's going on with that car."

Broome says he only wants to help and he just hopes he can make a difference in these sad situations, "if it will just save one life, one little kids life, then it'll be worth what ever money is spent on it."
