ConnectiCon 2013 hits Hartford Friday

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Thousands of people, many of whom were in brightly-decorated costumes, flocked to ConnectiCon 2013 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford on Friday.

What started out as a college project 10 years ago on the University of Hartford campus, has ballooned into one of the largest costume and video game conventions on the east coast.

The annual event features the latest information in comics, electronics, television, movies, graphic novels, traditional gaming, trading collectibles and anime.

"I think it's one of the best cons on the east coast. I have so much fun here, there are tons of events," said Psycho Bandit from Borderlines 2. "Everyone is so nice. It's just a great time to be here."

Marina Sirtis from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Michael Trucco from Battlestar Galactica and Neil Grayston from Eureka will be signing autographs, as well as the guest of honor Jim Cummings, who is the voice of Winnie the Pooh.

The price for all-weekend membership is $60, however, the prices vary for a one-day pass.

The event will be held at the following dates and times:

  • Friday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Sunday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Armin Arlert is a student by day, but on Friday she was Attack on Titan.

"It did take me a few weekends of non stop work, and carving and painting," Arlert said about the costume she made.

The precision and dedication they put into their costumes is getting them tons of attention from some of the 10,000 fans expected to walk through the Connecticut Convention Center doors this weekend.

"I enjoy people admiring me for what I make," Arlert said. "It's a weird hobby, but when people like what you do, it's really nice."

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
