Victim of Kilgore house fire sent to Dallas with severe burns

KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas woman was sent to a Dallas burn unit Tuesday after her home caught fire, injuring her.

She woke up to discover the fire around 7 a.m. in the 500 block of Turner Street.

"I don't know if I would have had the presence of mind to get up and run through that fire or not to get out," said Margaret Ritchie. Ritchie is the aunt of 53 year-old Sarah Barrett, the homeowner who suffered severe burns from this house fire.

Family members say Sarah ran out of the burning house through the back door.

"Sarah was in here asleep; she heard some popping noises. From what we understand, she got up, grabbed her cat and ran out but burnt her feet really bad and her legs, and was taken to the emergency room here," said Ritchie.

Now, hardly anything is left of the home. The family searched the home and said that it is completely gutted, with nothing salvageable.

The family says the only thing left is a few family photos they found in the trunk of her car in the garage.

Sarah was quickly found by a police officer who responded first to the scene and took her to the hospital.

The fire had already taken over most of the house by the time the fire department got the call.

"When our guys arrived on scene, there was heavy fire involvement and they took a defensive approach to the fire and hit the fire from the outside because of the amount of fire there was," said Michael Simmons, the Assistant Fire Chief of Kilgore Fire Department.

Sarah was then transferred to the burn unit at Parkland Hospital in Dallas for treatment.

"The fire is still under investigation. It looks like it was an accidental fire but the cause has not been determined yet," said Simmons.

With nothing left, the family only asks for one thing.

"Prayers, lots of prayers please, yes," said Ritchie.

We're told by hospital officials that Sarah is out of the ER and in a room.

Doctors are still determining if Sarah will need skin graft.
