National humane society offers $5,000 reward for information about who abused ETX dog

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or person responsible for shooting a Longview dog more than 30 times with a pellet gun.

The dog was found covered in blood with pellets lodged in its head and body. On Friday afternoon, that dog found a forever home.

Valerie Mills with the Humane Society of Northeast Texas met with a Longview family Friday afternoon and said they are the perfect fit for this dog who desperately needed a safe and loving home.

The animal shelter named the dog Spike, it is a name the adoptive Longview family said they will keep when they pick him up next week.

Spike will remain at the animal hospital through the weekend so he can be monitored as he recovers from the major surgery he had earlier this week.

Spike was found Tuesday afternoon by Longview police officers who immediately called Longview Animal Control for assistance. Longview Animal Control Officer Chris Kemper said the dog had a broken rope attached to its neck, leading him to believe the dog was tied up while being shot dozens of times.

Doctor Kenny Kimbrough with the Kimbrough Animal Hospital in Longview performed the surgery, which included an eye enucliation because of the damage done by the pellets.

Dr. Kimbrough said Spike also suffers from heart worm disease, but believes he will be well enough to recover at the family's home very soon.

After hearing this story, people across East Texas and all over the county, even the United Kingdom, donated more than $3,000 to help pay for the Spike's medical bills.

Dr. Kimbrough said any extra money will be given to the Humane Society of Northeast Texas.

Gregg County Crime Stoppers has received a $1,000 donation in addition to their reward for any information that leads to an arrest in this investigation.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
