Monsoon storms flush snakes out of hiding

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

While most people in the Valley awoke to the sound of raindrops, Bryan Hughes' sleep was interrupted by a phone call.

"It wasn't a surprise that's how I woke up this morning. A phone call saying I have a snake in my front yard come and get it. Followed by another call and probably a few more today," said Hughes.

The owner of Rattlesnake Solutions was able to track down a diamondback rattlesnake hiding out in a drain pipe after a woman stumbled across it in the backyard of her North Phoenix home.

"These aren't places a snake would normally hang out. It's great weather for them to be moving. This is when they eat the most and when they have their babies," said Hughes.

On another call, Hughes captured a gopher snake. Gopher snakes are often confused with rattlesnakes because of their pattern and striped tail.

"With all the humidity in the air, snakes are out running around trying to hunt. They have a lot of work to do before it gets cold again," said Hughes.

Hughes said not to be surprised if you run into a snake this time of year, but he does have a few tips to stay safe.

"Give a little bit of an extra look when you go outside. Fortunately they don't really hide in those situations. They'll be sitting out in the open," said Hughes.

Hughes said the best thing to do if you see a snake is to leave it alone. If you want it removed, your best bet is to call a professional to take care of it.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
