LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The United Way of Angelina County started their budget meeting Tuesday morning. Nearly 30 volunteers interviewed 21 agencies about their requests for funding needs.
The organization raised over $700,000 last year and will spend all day Wednesday going over the overall budget.
Mark Hicks, the United Way chairperson, says this is a timely decision and is based on how well the requests from each agency will benefit the community.
"You know, we look for needs in the community. United Way's primary purpose is food, shelter and clothing and those are major concerns. You know they come in, give us an idea of equipment they need to purchase or things they are doing within their agency that would benefit people in their community," Hick said.
United Way of Angelina County will then divide the money to each agency based on the extent of their requests. The second day of the budget hearing will begin tomorrow.
