PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police arrested a 21-year-old man Wednesday after the death of an 8-month-old girl who suffered significant trauma, including burns to her body.

Adrian Ponce, the boyfriend of the child's mother, was arrested after police officers and emergency personnel found the girl not breathing in the family's apartment near 29th Avenue and Greenway Road about 3:30 a.m., said Officer James Holmes.

Sabrina Santos-Vasquez died at the hospital a short time later, Holmes said.

Medical personnel at the hospital told police about the injuries, though no official cause of death had been determined.

Holmes said Ponce is not the natural father of the infant.

Holmes said Ponce told police he had shaken and caused the burns to the baby, and was later booked into the Maricopa County Jail on eight counts of child abuse and related charges.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the official cause of death.

Holmes said the investigation is ongoing and more charges could be filed as a result.

Neighbors of the baby's home near 29th Street and Greenway Road told CBS 5 News that they are shocked.

Neighbors also said they saw CPS take away another child from the same home Wednesday morning.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
