PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix man faces child abuse charges after police said he rammed a vehicle containing his wife and three children.

Napoleon Alcanzar-Garcia, 30, was booked into jail on three counts of child abuse and one count of aggravated assault.

Monday's incident stemmed from a custody dispute in Mesa. Police had given his wife permission to take the children home, pick up some belongings and leave, court documents stated.

Alcanzar-Garcia waited for his wife on a nearby freeway and followed her home, police said. While she was placing items in her vehicle, her husband blocked her car from leaving, officers said.

His wife loaded belongings into another vehicle and as she was trying to back out with her three children inside, Alcanzar-Garcia intentionally rammed the rear-end of her SUV and continued to push against the vehicle, court paperwork stated.

A family member who saw the events unfold ended up breaking the driver's side window of the car Alzanzar-Garcia was in, hitting him and pulling him from his vehicle, police said.

When officers arrived, they said they found evidence consistent with the witnesses' story.
