PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The sons of a 73-year-old woman found dead in a van among kennels containing 35 sickly animals pleaded guilty Monday to charges of adult abuse and animal cruelty.

Court officials said Gregory Stout, 44, and Alan Stout, 42, made the pleas before a judge Monday morning in Maricopa County Superior Court.

On Nov. 27, a judge sentenced the victim's husband, Alva Stout, 79, to two years of probation for vulnerable adult abuse and cruelty to animals.

The body of Lola Mae Stout was found in the back seat of a cockroach- and spider-infested van July 14. Her husband was also riding in the van and was sitting next to her body when they arrived in Phoenix, police said.

The sons and husband gave conflicting reports about the events that led to Lola Mae Stout's death, but they agreed she was last seen alive when the family left Quartzsite.

The van also contained three dirty and moldy animal carriers with 12 dogs, 22 cats and a pigeon, police said.

Arizona Humane Society investigators told officers the animals were all malnourished, abused and neglected. The animals were emaciated, dehydrated, bug infested and bloated, with matted hair or hair loss, ear and ringworm infections and eye and nose discharges and many were expected to be destroyed, AHS investigators said.

Police said Lola Mae Stout had prior medical conditions which required specific medical care, including prior strokes, high blood pressure, goiter and schizophrenia.
