SAN AUGUSTINE, TX (KTRE) - A man who works for San Augustine County Emergency Medical Services is apparently in trouble with federal authorities for health care fraud.

San Augustine County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Gary Cunningham said a federal marshal brought Shon Cooper, 42, into the jail on Tuesday and on Wednesday he was taken to Beaumont for arraignment.

Cunningham confirmed Cooper works for San Augustine County EMS. However, EMS director Charles Sharp said Cooper had only worked for his company since Jan. 25, and the charges come from a previous employer in Shelby County. Sharp said he did not learn of the investigation until Tuesday afternoon and immediately terminated Cooper's employment as soon as he learned of the arrest.

Sharp said Cooper was an excellent employee and came to work for him with good references.

As of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Cooper's federal criminal charge had not been unsealed.
