Lufkin home in second place in nationwide home makeover contest

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin family is in the running for a dream house makeover. The 118-year-old home is one of 20 houses left in the nationwide Behr Paint "Make My Home Beautiful" contest. Voting opened today for the public to pick the grand prize winner.

Darla Hendrickson, the homeowner of the historical home, says she fell in love with it when she was only 16 years old.

"It was just a house that I thought was the coolest house. I thought it might be my house someday," Hendrickson said.

Built in 1895, the house was owned by a prominent family in the Angelina Lumber Company. But seven years ago, Hendrickson found the house condemned.

"The porch was falling in, which was taking part of the roof with it. So we've rebuilt the whole porch, the inside we've totally redone," Hendrickson said.

But with two kids in college and one on the way to school, financial constraints have been hard. That's when Hendrickson came across the Behr paint competition and decided on a whim to enter.

"I went in and entered and surprisingly ended up in the top 20 to get voted on by the public," Hendrickson said.

If you're interested in voting for the Hendrickson home, all you have do is visit, like the Behr Paint page, and vote. If the house wins, it will get a paint makeover, which it desperately needs, and will be featured in Behr advertising.

"It's an exciting thing, especially since our house is so old and is being part of Lufkin's history," Hendrickson said.

Right now the house is in second place, but Hendrickson can't believe her spur of the moment decision has come so far.

"Like I said, I fell in love with this house at 16," Hendrickson said.

And Hendrickson hopes the rest of the country will fall in love with her home too.
