World War II veteran Orville Crockett, a Hometown Hero

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

If you call Orville Crockett by his first name he may not answer. But he will answer to "Davey."

"Davey - picked up when that movie came out in 1952, I believe," Crockett said.

But this Davey Crockett is being recognized for his service to the United States Air Force.

"Best thing ever happened to me," said Crockett, 85.

Crockett served in the Air Force during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

"I was in the tail end of World War II, all of Korea, and first half of Vietnam," Crockett said.

Crockett enlisted in the Texas National Guard when he was just 16 years old. At 17, he volunteered for the United States Army, but was transferred to the Air Force shortly after that. He worked as a flight mechanic for 20 years before retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1966.

Crockett spent most of his time in Alaska, Canada and Greenland.

"All over cold weather, all over the north," he said.

"Everybody on flying status had to go to Arctic survival school. They'd take us out in the woods and drop us off for four days with a tent and a bedroll and some snares. You had to catch a rabbit if you wanted something to eat."

Crockett says one of his biggest accomplishments was helping build the North American Defense System during the Cold War.

"We had radar sats all over Alaska and they were classified."

Crockett says these radar satellites were scattered all across the northern and western portion of Alaska to guard the United States against Russian missiles or aircraft.
