PHOENIX (CBS5) -

An officer attempting to serve a search warrant for drugs on a man in a wheelchair shot and killed the suspect during a struggle, Mesa police said.

Mesa police spokesman Sgt. Tony Landato said the shooting occurred about 9:30 a.m. Sunday near Williams and Main Street.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Landato said 49-year-old Chris Allan Chipman was known to police from recent drug-related incidents this year.

The officers saw Chipman fidgeting with his waistband, where he had concealed two knives, Landato said.

They also noticed another bulge that turned out to be a small handgun, Landato said. They said Chipman grabbed the weapon and a struggle ensued.

One of the police officers fired his weapon at least one time, striking Chipman, Landato said. Chipman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers later found more knives in a backpack, and the gun was loaded and reported stolen, Landato said.

Chipman's previous criminal history included convictions for aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, theft, and disorderly conduct.

He also had charges of possession of narcotics, drug paraphernalia and child endangerment pending, Landato said.

The investigation was continuing, Landato said.
