Authorities recover bodies of Shelby Co. child and rescuer who drowned in pond

SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says a 7-year-old boy and his rescuer drowned in a pond Sunday afternoon.

In a press release, the sheriff's office says they received a 911 call from Gina Porterfield around 1:50 p.m. Sunday reporting that children had driven an ATV into a pond in front of the Porterfield residence of Hwy 96 South off County Road 1005 in Shelby County.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office and Center Police responded and immediately went into the water upon arrival.

According to authorities, Danny Porterfield went into the water to search for 7-year-old Carter Amburn after the accident. Amburn was the friend of Porterfield's grandson.

Both Amburn and Porterfield were missing when first responders arrived.

Deputy Bobby Carlson located Amburn not far from the bank of the pond at which time CPR started and continued until Ace EMS arrived and transported Amburn to San Augustine Memorial Hospital where he later died.

Porterfield's body was recovered around 4:52 p.m by the Desoto Parrish dive team.

Shelby County Sheriff's Office, Center Police, Texas Highway Patrol, Center Volunteer Fire Department, Texas Game Wardens, Desoto Parrish Dive Team and many neighbors and concerned citizens assisted with the rescue efforts, according to the press release.
