Angelina County law enforcement agencies are searching for a 37-year-old Lufkin man who allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend and her daughter in an ambush-style attack late Sunday night.

According to Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanches, the suspect, Kevin Jabbar McKelvey, is considered armed and dangerous. McKelvey was last seen in a primer-colored 1994 Chevrolet pickup. Its license plate number is AD84840.

The double murder occurred in the Cedar Grove community at approximately 11:57 p.m. Sunday. Killed were Teresa Hoyle, 39, and her daughter, Shaunika Hoyle, 22, both of Lufkin. Teresa Hoyle had three children, and her two youngest daughters, 9-year-old twins, were in the car with her when she was shot.

Sanches said Teresa Hoyle and her daughter pulled up to the mother's house in the 100 block of Charlton Rd. in a car driven by an unknown man. McKelvey allegedly used a rifle to shoot and kill Shaunika Hoyle when she entered the house.

At that point, McKelvey allegedly went outside and shot Teresa Hoyle through the passenger window, Sanches said. Teresa Hoyle was struck in the head by the gunfire, and the driver of the car rushed her to Lufkin Memorial Hospital. However, she was pronounced on arrival at the hospital.

The twin girls suffered minor injuries from glass fragments. However, they are safe and are in the custody of a family member.

When McKelvey is apprehended, he will be charged with capital murder, Sanches said.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice records show that McKelvey has two prior convictions on his record. On Feb. 17, 1995, a Nacogdoches County jury convicted him for attempted murder and sentenced him to 14 years in prison.

McKelvey was released on parole on June 18, 2003. His parole supervision ended on Oct. 31, 2008.

On December 1, 2006, McKelvey was convicted of evading detention. According to TDCJ records, he served a six-month sentence in the Angelina County Jail.

Anyone with any information about McKelvey's whereabouts should call the Angelina County Sheriff's Office at (936) 634-3332 or the Lufkin Police Department at (936) 633-0356.

"Kevin took care of Teresa and the kids, and they had problems just like anybody else but I don't know what happened," said Patrick McKelvey, the uncle of Kevin. "And right now he's the only one that can tell what happened."

"I know that they had some problems but you would always see them together at least once or twice a week," the uncle said.

On Monday, both families were hoping and praying for peace.

"We're praying for the other family because it's a tragedy all the way around," said Linda Harper, the cousin of Teresa Hoyle.

"We want the family to know that we are sorry for their loss," said Patrick McKelvey. "We just want him to turn himself in, and do the right thing."
