Student Dies After Lightning Strike

One Grapeland High School football player died this afternoon in a Houston hospital after the football team was struck by lightning yesterday, according to Grapeland Superintendent Buddy Sumrall.

Senior Russell Pennington died from severe burnes caused from the lightning strike. Officials say another student is listed as fair, while a coach is hospitalized for observation.

About 30 other players were treated for soreness, headaches, abdominal pains and burns following the accident late yesterday afternoon.

Sophomore Jeremy Davis is improving at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. Coach Geoffrey Bowdoin was hospitalized in Crockett.
