GROVETON, TX (KTRE) -

A Trinity man is being charged following a grand jury indictment which accuses him of driving over his while he was drunk one day in May.

Joe Turner, 46, is charged with injury to a child.

Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace said he met with the district attorney's office after investigating the incident and he was advised to allow a grand jury to determine whether Turner committed a crime.

The grand jury indicted Turner on the charge last month and Turner was arrested last week on the charge.

Wallace said deputies responded to a home in the Lake L subdivision on May 8, when the children's mother came home and found her three-year-old daughter with scrapes and bruises.

"The brother kept saying to her, 'Daddy ran over sissy!'" Wallace said.

Wallace said the mother had left Turner alone with the children and during that time, Turner got drunk. Wallace said Turner could not remember what happened to the girl.

"It appeared he had run over her in his vehicle, not with a tire but just over her with the vehicle," Wallace said.

He said the girl suffered scrapes and bruises and is now in the sole custody of the mother.
