Chili's restaurants supporting Lufkin cousins battling cancer

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Chili's restaurant's throughout East Texas are hosting a give back event for two Lufkin cousins who are battling cancer together.

Hannah Merrel, age four, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia two years ago. In 2012, now two-year-old Allison Merrel received the same diagnosis.

A manager for Chili's in Lufkin saw their story on KTRE in June and wanted to lend a helping hand to them.

"I'm an avid KTRE fan. I have the app on my cell phone and I happened to read their story during the blood drive week," Jaime Brittain, Chili's manager, said.

Jaime Brittain says as a mother it's amazing to be able to help others thanks to Chili's.

"That's one of my favorite things about working for Chili's," Brittain said. "Our passion is giving back to the communities that we work in. I saw these girls and I saw that they're from here in Lufkin, and their story just reached out to me."

The Chili's Give Back Event will be held at eight different restaurants in East Texas on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

"As long as you let your server know you are here for the Merrel cousins, 10 percent of anything you spend will be donated to their cause," Brittain said.
