Hospice of East Texas providing free grief workshop for everyone

NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Many search for support after losing their loved one but sometimes they don't know resources are available to them right here in East Texas. Hospice of East Texas is reaching out to different communities offering free grief workshops this year. Hospice's social worker is helping others cope in a healthy way each week.

Anna Donihoo has been a social worker for the past four years helping East Texans understand grief. She's currently expanding the Hospice of East Texas grief workshop to a twice a year free six week class.

"Hopefully by the end of the six week workshop people will have had a safe work space to talk about what they're going through and they gain a sense of comfort from other people to know what they're going through is normal," Donihoo said.

For the next six weeks, participants will learn healthy ways to cope with the loss of their family members. The worship teaches participants how being open to talk to others about your loss will help with the healing process.

"When you lose somebody close it kind of flips your world upside down and you're trying to find your bearings," Donihoo said. "Grief is stress and it can do a number on you."

The grief workshops are available for any and everyone to gain a sense of hope while supporting others through the same journey.

"It helps individuals to build a relationship with others in our community who have experienced grief so they find another group that they can network with," said Director of Community Relations for Hospice of East Texas Jessica Henderson. "That's one way that we help individuals connect with others in our community."

For the past 12 years, Jessica Henderson has helped East Texans cope with their grief. She's hopeful participants will use the tools they gain from each workshop in their everyday lives.

"Start looking at grief in a sense that it is a journey and that we do have to take one step at a time," Henderson said.

With each step Donihoo will continue to teach participants how to handle their sorrows.

Grief workshops are held on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. through September 10, 2013, at Austin Heights Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, Texas.
