BALTIMORE, Ohio (AP) -
The mother of a central Ohio seventh-grader whose school district is refusing to let her play on a football team because she's a girl is considering taking legal action against the district.
The Eagle-Gazette (http://ohne.ws/1acdrUm ) in Lancaster reports that the student's mother, Anjee Jenkins, says the school's decision has left 12-year-old Makhaela Jenkins heartbroken. The mother says she will fight "until there is no hope left."
Liberty Union-Thurston District superintendent Paul Mathews told the newspaper he doubts the school board will reverse its policies on female athletes during its upcoming September meeting. He says the district considers football and wrestling contact sports and has the right to bar girls from playing on those teams.
The American Civil Liberties Union's Ohio chapter on Thursday called the district's decision "unacceptable and unlawful."
