TRINITY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Trinity man was arrested Thursday evening and has to buy a new car after he drove it on a bad wheel until it finally caught on fire, according to the Trinity County sheriff.

David Coots, 59, is charged with driving while intoxicated.

Sheriff Woody Wallace said the event began Thursday around 5:43 p.m. when a bicyclist on FM 3188 saw Coots under a 2001 Toyota Corolla and apparently trying to change a tire. However, Coots had fallen asleep under the car, according to the witness.

The witness then woke him up and helped him finish changing the tire. The witness said Coots got back behind the wheel and started to fall asleep again. The witness said he told Coots, "Hey, you're in no shape to drive."

Wallace said Coots then sped off and drove into the Peach Island subdivision. However, his new tire was apparently defective and caused damage to several miles of the road. He kept driving it until it caught on fire, Wallace said.

With the car on fire, Coots got out safely but then went back into the car to grab his cellphone to call 911.

Firefighters arrived and put out the fire. Wallace said one firefighter asked Coots why he was driving in the subdivision. Coots said he was looking for a boat ramp so he could drive his car into the lake to put out the fire.

Wallace said the firefighter asked why he was trying to put out a fire if his car was not on fire.

"He said he knew it would catch on fire," Wallace said.
