BBB: ‘Buyers beware' at Kentucky State Fair

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Kentucky State Fair may be a place for fun, but it's also a place where some people may try to take advantage of you. The Better Business Bureau says fairgoers should also be cautious when dealing with some indoor exhibitors.

"For most of the people out at the fair they are going to be walking around they are going to be checking out all these cool new items that people are trying to sell," said Reanna Smith-Hamblin of the Better Business Bureau.

New products on display meant to make life easier could be enticing to purchase but you need to ask questions about the product, and the company selling it.

The BBB suggests asking the following questions:

  • How long has the company been in business?
  • Does the exhibitor have a telephone number and address where they can be reached should the product be defective?
  • Is there a warranty or guarantee covering the product?
  • How long is the product covered?
  • If the product is defective, can the consumer get their money back or do they have to trade the damaged product for a new one?
  • Can you get the refund or exchange policy in writing?

Guarantees may give consumers a false sense of security, as a guarantee is often only as good as the company that stands behind the guarantee.

"So you're taking your chances either way but there's a lot of great little products out here a lot of fun stuff that people can purchase," said Smith-Hamblin.

Before you buy, you should also check the product itself. Make sure the product inside the packaging is what you wanted to buy. Packaging can be misleading and the item inside could be a counterfeit.

One final thing to remember - if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
