NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Nacogdoches teachers attended the district's convocation this morning. Inspiration came from the students themselves and from a unique motivational presentation that involved one thousand, yes one thousand, drums.
A drum for everyone was the first clue to NISD teachers that this year's convocation was not going to be like any other.
Teachers would have to wait for an explanation. Three students, who see teachers' achievements and faults, candidly presented tips and advice to the faculty. Even a freshman knows what it takes to be a good teacher.
"Step one, believe in your students and enjoy what you do," said Jeremiah Mosby an NHS freshman. "Teach, teach, teach. Be willing to change. I'm going to say that one more time because some people don't know how to change. "
Teachers were reminded their influence goes way beyond the classroom.
"Keep in mind you could be serving as this child's father, their mother, sibling or friend," said Bryce Carraway, a student leader. "You could possibly be all they have."
The sobering message transitioned into rousing symbolism.
There's nothing like a beat of one thousand drums to send the message it's time to unite.
The ensemble drum cafe had faculty and staff working in harmony in a matter of seconds. Sure words about teambuilding, connecting, and communication were thrown in, but this convocation definitely had a memorable beat.
Teachers have been preparing for weeks for the new school year. School starts on Monday in most districts.
