Angelina Co. Commissioners considering new tax rate

A new fiscal year brings on a new budget for Angelina County residents.

"We've tried to keep services at a consistent level and keep the tax rate low with all the officials and department heads," said County Judge Wes Suiter.

"The commissioners' court has done an excellent job at trying to balance services with the taxes imposed," said County Auditor Eddie Gray.

Even with the stability, a raise is still needed.

"We're talking about doing half a cent per hundred dollars of evaluation," said Gray.

The current tax rate is 0.4619 with the average tax payer paying around $442.

Under the proposed tax rate of 0.4669 the payment would jump to an average of $462, an average increase of $20.

The county already has a plan for the added revenue.

"A few years ago we implemented phase one of the security of the courthouse downtown and now we thought it was time to implement phase two," said Suiter.

Exact plans have not been disclosed yet, but commissioners agree it needs to be done.

"Everybody has seen on the news, the increase in violence and stuff," said Precinct 4 Commissioner Scott Cooper. "We're looking at prevention. A little bit of prevention now saves a whole lot of problems later."

The public will have two chances to voice their opinions on the matter. The first hearing will be on Sept.3 at 5:30 p.m. The second hearing will be Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. Both hearings will be at the Angelina County Commissioners court room.
