Slain child's mother: 'Please don't shoot my baby'

Sherry West Sherry West
COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The mother of a 13-month-old shot and killed, as the pair walked home from the Brunswick post office, became emotional as she testified in court on Tuesday about the day of her son's murder.

De'Marquise Elkins, 18, is charged with the killing. The trial was moved to Cobb County because of all the publicity in Glynn County.

Prosecutors said Elkins and another teen were trying to rob Sherry West as she walked with her son, Antonio Santiago, in a stroller in March.

"The big one approached me and demanded me to give him money," West told the court. "I told him I didn't have any."

West said she pleaded with Elkins not to shoot her or her son.

"He asked me if I wanted him to shoot my baby," cried West on the stand. "I said 'Please don't shoot my baby.'"

West described her attackers in court and then pointed to Elkins as the gunman.

"He walked over and shot my baby," said West. "Did you see him shoot your baby?" asked the prosecutor. "Yes. I tried to stop him.  I put my arms over my baby but he still shot him," cried West.

The defense began cross-examining West late Tuesday afternoon.  Elkins' attorneys attacked her testimony on several levels.

They suggested West and her son's father killed the child, possibly for $5,000 in insurance money. They also pointed out that West suffers from bipolar disease and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). The defense suggested that she did not clearly remember the day of the murder.

West returned to the stand on Wednesday.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
