LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Angelina County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 25-year-old Lufkin woman on a felony theft charge Tuesday after she allegedly stole three gold rings and one set of gold hoop earrings from the residence where she had been working as a caregiver.
Jennie Shanae Sims is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on a third-degree felony charge of theft between $1,500 and $20,000. No bail has been set at this time.
According to the arrest affidavit, an ACSO deputy made contact with a 30-year-old woman who explained that their Smith, their home healthcare provider, had taken jewelry from her and from her 80-year-old grandmother. The complainant said that Smith started working as their home health provider on Aug. 23.
On that day, the complainant and her grandmother noticed Sims entering and leaving the house several times. A day later, the complainant noticed several items of jewelry missing and called the Angelina County Sheriff's Office, the affidavit stated.
Then the complainant called the deputy back on Aug. 25 and told him she had called local jewelers with a list of descriptions of the stolen jewelry. An employee with Angelina Gold Buyers contacted the woman and told her that he might have some of items at his store.
The complainant met the deputy at Angelina Gold Buyers, and she was able to positively identify the two gold rings and a set of gold hoop earrings that had been sold to the store. The store employee provided the ACSO deputy with a receipt that stated Sims had sold the jewelry items to his store for $230.
The affidavit stated that the stolen items - three gold rings and a set of gold hoop earrings - have a total estimated value of more than $1,500 and less than $20,000.
According to Angelina County jail records, Smith has two previous arrests for theft on her record - one on April 16, 2010 and one on May 6, 2013.
