DEEP: State park reopens after man threatens to poison water

KILLINGWORTH, CT (WFSB) -

The park and swimming area at Chatfield Hollow State Park in Killingworth is expected to reopen Wednesday after a 55-year-old man was accused of threatening to "poison the waters" at the state park, according to officials.

On Tuesday afternoon, Wayde A. Isakson, of Madison was accused of sending more than 100 threatening emails to Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection staff members.

"The emails contained a very specific threat to kill staff members," said Colonel Kyle Overturf with the DEEP EnCon Police. "There was also a specific threat to poison the waters, the swim-area waters here at Chatfield Hollow State Park."

Environmental police said once they got word of that threat, they found Isakson leaving  Chatfield Hollow State Park Tuesday afternoon and heading toward his vehicle. He was arrested.

Police searched the pond, the park and the surrounding area as well as his vehicle, but they didn't find anything hazardous. No hazardous materials were found at the home of Isakson, police said.

The park and swimming area at Chatfield Hollow State Park is closed until Wednesday afternoon.

The park could not reopen until results of tests taken by DEEP officials, were completed. There were no harmful substances found in the water, DEEP officials said.

Isakson was charged with making terroristic threats, first-degree threatening and first-degree breach of peace.

Isakson, who is currently being held at a medical facility for evaluation, is expected to be arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court on Sept. 10.

The arrest remains under investigation by the DEEP EnCon police.

"It's a great place," said  John O'Donnell of Killingworth. "The state keeps it up beautifully and its a great resource for the people in the area."

DEEP EnCon Police patrol state parks and test the water quality at swimming areas regularly. But, they said this is a great example of see something, say something  and the best line of defense is the public keeping their eyes and ears open
