Sept. 17 meeting for AZ first responder coverage

PHOENIX (AP) -

A legislative committee will hold a special meeting to discuss Arizona's role in providing catastrophic coverage for the uncovered firefighters who died in the Yarnell Hill wildfire.

Some of the 19 firefighters killed were classified as seasonal employees with the city of Prescott, so their families don't qualify for full survivors' benefits.

Also to be discussed will be how to provide coverage for all Arizona first responders in the event of future disasters.

The Sept. 17 meeting of the House Public Safety, Military and Regulatory Affairs Committee is being called in response to legislative language proposed by House Speaker Andy Tobin.

The lightning-sparked fire trapped the Granite Mountain Hotshots on June 30 as it barreled toward Yarnell. It burned 8,400 acres before it was controlled on July 12.
