PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

Closing arguments in the trial of a former Phoenix police officer charged with murder, aggravated assault and animal cruelty for fatally shooting a man and his dog are set for Monday morning.

Richard Chrisman has pleaded not guilty and maintained that the October 2010 shootings of 29-year-old Daniel Rodriguez and his pit bull were justified because Rodriguez reached for the officer's gun. Chrisman testified last week he feared Rodriguez was going to "smash my brains in."

Prosecutors say Chrisman used unnecessary excessive force after Rodriguez questioned the right of the two officers to be inside his mother's home.

Jurors are expected to begin deliberations after hearing the prosecutor and defense attorneys argue the case and Judge Warren Granville give final jury instructions.

Jury instructions are scheduled to be read at 10:30 a.m. followed by closing arguments.
