Mesa man stable after boat falls on him

MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A Mesa man was in serious but stable condition at a Scottsdale hospital after a boat fell on him Tuesday night.

The 39-year-old man had set up cinder blocks to hold up the hitch of the boat trailer in the yard of his home near Guadalupe and Alma School roads, said Forrest Smith of the Mesa Fire Department.

The cinder blocks shifted in the grass softened by recent rains and when he went to adjust them about 8 p.m., the hitch slipped off and the 24- to 28-foot boat fell and trapped him, Smith said.

Mesa police officers and firefighters were able to lift the boat and pull him out.

He was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare-Osborn Hospital and was talking and alert, Smith said.
