For a week two match-up it doesn't get any better than a top five showdown between two 1A power-houses in alto and Tenaha...we heard from the tigers last night, so this evening, the focus is on the Yellowjackets. Head coach Paul Gould's team enters the contest at 1 and 1 and is coming off a 47 to 27 victory over Groveton. Alto won last years meeting over Tenaha 25 to 13, and will look to take two in a row over their East Texas rivals. Big plays will be made and points will definitely be put on the scoreboard., so the Yellowjackets say a road win will come down too the small things.
Running back Jacolby Whitaker said, "Really the little things. Ball control, special teams are going to be big in this game, just taking care of the ball and a lot of momentum."Gould added, "Any time you play a ball game like this against a caliber team like that you cant turn the ball over. I think offensively holding onto the football doing our job there and then defensively you know wrapping up and tackling."Senior Nicolas Leon finished by saying, "Its going to take a lot of concentration, you know everybody being together as a team. I think we just have to keep hammering those guys you know."
As for the excitement, Whitaker says, "a lot of people have been talking about this in the offseason, this be a big game on our schedule, so there is a lot of hype around this game so I'm ready for Friday."
Seeing 10 points next to Tenaha on the scoreboard at the final horn is a rarity. But it happened last week as the Tigers lost to 2A Garrison by seven points. There is no time to panic or sulk though as head coach Terry Ward's team is set to host number five Alto for the Red Zone game of the week. After being out at practice, I promise you number three Tenaha has already turned the page. playing a tough non-district schedule as a small 1A school is nothing new to the Tigers. They welcome the challenge and know it will pay off down the road. They also realize however that a complete game on both offense and defense, especially producing more points will be needed to take down the Yellowjackets.
