More than 200 LMS students take part in Active Angelina's 'Walk to School Day'

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - More than 200 middle school students teamed up with the City of Lufkin's Active Angelina program for a walk to school Thursday morning.

The "Walk to School Day" encourages students to stay active in a fun way. Walking to school isn't a daily routine for many of these students. Many of them are dropped off each morning.

However, they decided to get involved with Active Angelina Thursday morning.

"Active Angelina is a program that was started last year by the city, and the goal of it is to try to get the community involved in physical activity," said Cheryle Idom, the girls athletic coordinator for Lufkin Middle School.

So these Lufkin middle schoolers "hoofed it" on a half mile walk to school.

"We came out here to get active for Angelina County," said Fatima Davis, a seventh grader at LMS.

Step by step staff members, students, and parents will formulate a fun weekly routine together.

"Our goal is to establish lifelong healthy habits, and the kids are fired up about it," said Jesus Gomez, the principal at LMS.

Getting fired up at 7 a.m. wasn't hard for seventh grader Tamia Powell.

"You can be active even if you're not at school," Powell said.

Powell walks roughly a mile to school every morning and is hopeful Active Angelina's "Walk to School Day" will help others continue to stay active.

"It means a lot to me because we have some obese people at this school so then you want to change," Powell said.

Lufkin Middle School's principal was hopeful this year's "Walk to School Day" would be better than the first year.

"Last year, we had 169 kids come out so I challenged the kids to have more this year," Gomez said.

The students at LMS met the challenge; in all, 253 students rewarded themselves by staying fit.

"We see too many kids that aren't doing anything so when we see boys or girls get up and do something extra it's a good reward," Idom said. "It will help them later on in life."

Active Angelina will continue to team up with the middle school this year inviting parents to join their students for Zumba and indoor games throughout the school year.
