TRINITY, TX (KTRE) - Trinity Police had to break a window to save a baby trapped in a locked car for 28 minutes after his grandmother locked the keys in the van with him Thursday afternoon.
Chief Steven Jones said Brookshire Brothers surveillance video shows the woman go to the back of the van and put something for the six-month-old baby in a shopping cart before shutting the trunk at 3:10 p.m.
It was then that the woman realized she had locked the keys in the van and called her husband.
"She just didn't know what to do," Jones said.
Jones said other people came to try to help but also did not know what to do. It wasn't until someone told a store manager before police were called.
Sgt. Randy Wheeler then used an asp baton to break the window and get the baby out of the vehicle.
"She said it had been only about 10 minutes, but I could tell it had been longer," Jones said.
The baby was locked in the car for 28 minutes in 95-degree heat, according to surveillance footage, Jones said.
Jones said the baby was checked out by EMTs and the grandmother was able to do her grocery shopping.
"I don't want anyone to judge this woman," Jones said. "But I want to make it clear that I hope people will learn from this and always call law enforcement."
