LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Three feet of water has built up under the railroad trestle on US 59 North in Lufkin, causing crews to divert traffic on both sides of the road.
TxDOT spokeswoman Kathi White said northbound traffic is being diverted to Davisville Road (FM 3521) and southbound traffic is being diverted to Spence Street (FM 3439).
White said the US 59 traffic will be closed until further notice.
As of 5:30 p.m., traffic to US 59 North to Nacogdoches is backed up to the Lufkin Avenue exit on the loop. Motorists also need to be aware that there is a mulitple-vehicle accident at the intersection of Paul Ave. and the loop, so traffic will probably be slowed even more as a result.
Brad Hlozek, KTRE's chief meteorlogist said Friday's thunderstorms have already dropped as miuch as 5 inches of rainfall on East Texas. That rainfall amount was reported in the soiuthern part of Rusk County, near Mount Enterprise.
