Lock your doors and get to know your neighbors because national night out is next week

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - National Night Out is about to return to the oldest town in Texas and local law enforcement is urging neighborhood watch areas to register in time.

Thursday, September 26 is the cutoff date for neighborhood watches to register for the national night out event, which is on October 1.

Residents are encouraged to lock their doors and spend the evening getting to know their neighbors in the name of crime prevention, Greg Sowell, a sergeant for the Nacogdoches Police Department, said.

"Neighborhood watch is based on neighbors watching out for other neighbors and its certainly important that these neighbors know each other and this gives them an opportunity to know each other," Sowell said.

This is the 25th year the National Night Out has been celebrated in Texas, and Sowell says there are about 16 neighborhood watches registered with the city of Nacogdoches. He expects half of those neighborhoods to participate in the event.

If you are interested in forming a neighborhood watch program or hosting a block party next Tuesday, contact the police department at (936) 559-2618.
