LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A longtime employee at Temple Inland, who has also served as mayor in Pineland and is a former POW received the Silver Bucket Award at Tuesday's Small Business Forum in Lufkin.

The award recognizes achievement for outstanding service in East Texas.

John Booker Jr. was a POW from fall of 1943 until spring of 1945, according to the Diboll History Center documents. He went to work for Southern Pine Lumber Company in Diboll and engineered several infrastructure projects before moving to Pineland.

"I was kind of in a state of shock for a little bit because I didn't recall all the things they said about me," Booker said.

He was mayor of Pineland for 27 years.
