Alcohol suspected in deadly Geauga County crash

GEAUGA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

An investigation is underway after a deadly crash in Geauga County.

The crash happened on US Route 322 just before 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

A 2004 Dodge Dakota was traveling eastbound on US Route 322. A 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling southbound on Clay Street. The Chevrolet failed to yield at the stop sign at the intersection of US Route 322 and Clay Street, the Chevrolet was struck by the Dodge as it drove through the intersection.

The Dodge was driven by Jacob M. Cochran, 34. Cochran had his seatbelt on and did not suffer any injuries. Cochran was arrested for OVI and taken to Geauga Hospital where he submitted to a blood test. The results of that test are unknown at this time.

The Chevrolet was driven by Gary L. Swontek, 64. Swontek was pronounced dead on scene by the Geauga County Coroner's Office. He did not have his seat belt on.

Speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash at this time. This crash remains under investigation.
