Escaped Rains Co. inmate arrested outside Lubbock

Posted: Updated:
Garza County (KLTV) - Rains County investigators said an inmate that escaped custody during a probation hearing Tuesday has been arrested in Garza County, TX.

Authorities said Crystal Robinson stole a Ford Focus in Cumby before fleeing the area with another Rains County man to West Texas.

Investigators said local authorities in Garza County responded to a call of a male assault of a female and at that time, Robinson attempted to use a known alias, which flagged local authorities to call Rains County.

Robinson had previously stolen a Ford F-150 from Quinlan last week, before abandoning it and taking off in the Ford Focus. Authorities said they have recovered both vehicles.

Rains County Sheriff’s officials said the woman fled out a side door of the courthouse annex building at 9:46 a.m. on Tuesday, taking off either on foot or in a vehicle.

Robinson was due in court for a probation hearing, when authorities said she was able to slip away—still in handcuffs and without her shoes.

“She was sitting in the jury box which is standard practice for our inmates there during pre-trials,” Strawn said. “She exited off the side door and inmates notified us that she exited behind the constables back and outside the court building.”

Robinson was sentenced to probation in July for evading arrest with a vehicle and theft by check of less than $500. She now also faces charges for escaping custody in Rains County. Authorities said a pending case in neighboring Hunt County may be a motive for her fleeing.

“She's currently person of interest in offense in Hunt County that I am aware of,” Strawn said. “That may be one of the reasons she decided to leave.”

Robinson currently remains in the Garza County jail.
