Valley small businesses already impacted by govt shutdown

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The impact of the federal government shutdown is already being felt by local businesses, who do business with government agencies.

Wist Office Products in Tempe is expected to lose thousands of dollars per week, as a direct result of the government shutdown, that has closed federal offices around the state and across the country.

The U.S. attorney's office, U.S. Border Patrol, FBI and various military bases, all place orders  with the locally owned business.

"You don't have people consuming copy paper, and you don't have people that need new file folders," said Wist business director Sam Richard. "There's definitely a direct impact to what we do, day and night.

Ian Wist is the owner of Wist Office Products.

He said that there are hundreds of small businesses, just like his, that are scrambling this week to make up for lost revenue.

And some employees are taking a hit too.

When there's less business, a number of companies will be forced to cut back hours, the longer the government shutdown lasts, Wist said.

"The public in general is fed up, they are tired of it," said Wist. "People are elected to get things done. Shutting down is not an option or a solution . This country was founded on compromise and that's what needs to happen in D.C., so folks here in our state can get the job done."
