PHOENIX (CBS5) -

An explosive fire at a Phoenix scrap yard forced the evacuations of about 20 workers early Wednesday morning, but no one was hurt, a Phoenix Fire Department spokesman said.

About 50 firefighters arrived to fight the fire that broke out about 1:30 a.m. at SA Recycling, 3640 S. 35th Ave., said Phoenix Fire Capt. Ruben Saavezra.

The fire was contained to the middle of the property, and involved mostly metal with the flames burning underneath, proving a tough task to extinguish with water trucks, Saavezra said.

Instead, the most effective tactic was a truck pouring foam over the fire because it could penetrate the scrap metal and get underneath to the burning materials.

Some explosions occurred during the early moments of the fire, but no one was injured

Saavezra said the owners of the scrap yard would use their heavy equipment to start moving the debris, making it easier for the water trucks to get to the burning material.

The plant employs about 80 workers during its peak hours, but because it was early in the morning, the shift only involved the 20 employees, Saavezra said.

He said there was some concern about smoke from the debris, but that it posed no threat to residents.
