PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police arrested two men Monday on suspicion of murder after an accomplice of theirs was shot and killed when the three attacked another man over the weekend.

Talon Verdugo, 20 and Alexander Homyak, 21, were booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and conspiracy.

They and Dylan Carroll are alleged to have attacked Jonathan Hamilton while he walked the stairs to his apartment near Greenway Parkway and Seventh Street on Saturday night.

Hamilton, armed with a handgun, tried to defend himself and shot Carroll in his upper left leg after he was robbed of his wallet and cell phone, police said.

Verdugo and Homyak, dressed in black bodysuits and masks, ran and left Carroll at the apartment complex, police said.

Hamilton called 911 with his girlfriend's cell phone, police said, and Carroll later died at a Phoenix hospital.

Detectives showed Hamilton a previous mug shot of Carroll. Hamilton said he recognized Carroll as being a friend of Vergudo, who had bought heroin from him in the past, police said.

Carroll's mother and uncle told police that Verdugo and Homyak were friends of Carroll's, and matched the descriptions of the surviving attackers, police said.

The investigation led officers to Homyak's Phoenix residence, where both suspects were taken into custody.

Verdugo told police Homyak and Carroll beat Hamilton and were attempting to duct tape his hands when Hamilton pulled the gun and fired.

Verdugo said the suspects were looking to recover some money they claimed Carroll lost to Hamilton.
