The director of the Arizona Department of Revenue has died at age 65.

State officials say John Greene died Tuesday night, but a cause of death wasn't immediately announced Wednesday.

Greene served in the Arizona Senate from 1991 to 1996 and was its president for two terms.

He was appointed director of the Department of Revenue by Gov. Jan Brewer in 2011.

As an attorney and tax expert, Greene also worked for the Dial Corp., Greyhound, New York Life Insurance Co. and Manhattan Life Insurance Co.

Greene is survived by his wife Janice and two adult sons. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Brewer issued a statement in the wake of his death:

"John was a public servant in every sense of the word. Whether for his most recent role as Director of the Arizona Department of Revenue, his honorable service as Senate President or his noble contribution to both government and the private sector throughout his impressive career, John's devotion to Arizona will not be forgotten. He always conducted himself with humility, graciousness and integrity.

"More than what he did for our state, John will be remembered for what he did for others. He will be remembered for his kind heart, selfless character and contagious sense of humor. I've known John both professionally and personally for many years. I will always cherish our time together in the Legislature, where he and I served together as Senate President and Majority Whip, respectively. I will always appreciate his loyalty as a fellow member of that leadership team. I am eternally grateful to call John a friend. He will be sorely missed.

"Indeed, John's passing is a loss for Arizonans, particularly for those fortunate enough to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Janice, as well as his sons, Richard and Christopher. I ask that all Arizonans join me in extending our deepest condolences and prayers to his family, friends and colleagues as they seek strength during this difficult time."

CBS 5 News received the following comments from Secretary of State Ken Bennett:

"I am saddened to learn of the passing of John," said Secretary of State Ken Bennett. "He was a consummate public servant having served in the roles of Senate president and the director of the Department of Insurance among others. Arizona will miss John's leadership and dedicated service to the state."
