NM murder trial enters closing argument phase

Posted: Updated:
ALBUQUERQUE, NM (AP) -

The defense says "there is a mountain of doubt" in the trial of an Arizona convict accused of the carjacking and slaying of a retired Oklahoma couple.

During closing arguments Wednesday, defense attorney Michael Burt told a federal jury in Albuquerque that "there's only one truth here, and that's we don't know beyond a reasonable doubt what happened."

He called into question the statements of key witnesses and accomplices of John McCluskey, who testified under plea agreements for reduced sentences.

McCluskey is accused of capital murder in the August 2010 deaths of Gary and Linda Haas of Tecumseh, Okla., following an escape from an Arizona prison. The couple's charred remains were found among the wreckage of their burned-out travel trailer on a remote ranch in eastern New Mexico.
