Mother of capital murder suspect James Calvert wants her guns returned

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas father, charged with the capital murder of his children's mother, was in court Thursday, but the hearing had little to do with him.

According to Tyler Police, 42-year-old James Calvert shot and killed his ex-wife, Jelena Sriraman, before kidnapping their young son and fleeing to Louisiana.

The hearing was called on behalf of Calvert's mother who is hoping to get some of her belongings back after police seized them while executing a search warrant last year.

Last fall, Tyler Police confiscated more than two dozen guns from Calvert's home. Thursday we learned that some of those guns, at least three of them, belonged to Calvert's mother, Patsy Calvert. Patsy and her attorney were in court Thursday to get those guns back.

An attorney representing Patsy Calvert told the judge that the district attorney's office had agreed to hand over a rifle and two pistols that belonged to her. She and Calvert were living in the same home when he was arrested. Other electronic evidence, like cell phones, computers and iPods may be returned to Patsy too, but only after the district attorney's office determines that they are in fact hers and are of no use to them in this case.

As far as Calvert's capital murder trial is concerned, that may not start until February of next year.
