Nacogdoches PD: Intoxicated man found lying in road tried to take officer's guns

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Nacogdoches Police officers arrested a 46-year-old man on a long list of felony and misdemeanor charges after they found him lying in the middle of the road, and he tried to take one officer's weapon from him when he approached the suspect to check on him.

Laverne Dwayne Henderson, of Nacogdoches, is still being held in the Nacogdoches County jail on a second-degree felony charge of possession of a controlled substance between 4 and 200 grams, a state-jail felony charge of attempting to a take a weapon from an officer, three Class A misdemeanor charges - resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance less than one gram, and possession of a dangerous drug, a Class B misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana less than 2 ounces, and a Class C misdemeanor charge of public intoxication.

Collectively, Henderson's bail has been st at $39,000.

According to the police report, Nacogdoches Polices officers responded to a medical assist call about an unresponsive man lying in the middle of Fourth Street at 5:48 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived on the scene, Henderson was acting "very erratically."

According to the arrest affidavit, Henderson charged one of the NPD officers and grabbed his gunbelt. The officer shot Henderson the chest with a Taser, but the suspect broke the wire.

When the second officer arrived on the scene, Henderson was allegedly still approaching the first officer in an "aggressive manner." The second shot Henderson in the back with a Taser, and the suspect finally fell to the ground.

When the NPD officers searched Henderson, he was allegedly found to be in possession of several different types of drugs. Henderson was found to be in possession of a Scope bottle containing suspected PCP and a pill bottle with two different types of prescription drugs, the affidavit stated.

After the NPD officers took Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital's emergency room for treatment, he was taken to the Nacogdoches County Jail. During the book-in process, Henderson was being led to a cell when he allegedly fished a small bag of marijuana out of his pants and threw it into the kitchen, according to the affidavit.
