PAULDEN, AZ (CBS5) -
Authorities in Yavapai County say four people were killed when a plane crashed and reportedly exploded on impact.
The victims have been tentatively identified by authorities as James Parrish, 57, from Terrell, Texas and his wife Lisa Parrish, 54.
Yavapai County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said the plane is registered to James Parrish.
Two more victims have been identified as Mike Hughes, 65, who had homes in Paulden, Arizona and Aurora, Colorado, along with his wife, Joy Hughes, 63.
Officials said the six-passenger aircraft crashed about 12:30 p.m. on the Gunsite firearms training academy property in Paulden.
D'Evelyn said the Cessna-340 was coming from Bullhead City, AZ, and initial reports indicate the plane was expected to land at the Prescott Regional Airport, with those on board scheduled to arrive at Gunsite later in the day. D'Evelyn said investigators have not yet determined why the aircraft was over Gunsite before going to the Prescott airport.
A witness in the area reported seeing a large ball of fire.
"There was fire around the brush and trees as well as the plane itself was on fire," said Chino Valley Fire District spokesman Rob Zazueta.
D'Evelyn said some witnesses mentioned the plane appeared to clip some trees, while other witnesses said the plane may have struck a radio tower on Gunsite grounds.
"During a pass over the training academy, part of the plane struck a radio tower on the academy grounds and likely was a main causal factor in this crash," said D'Evelyn.
"I heard this plane coming over and it turned in and looked and it was coming in from the north and it turned at a 95 degree angle and then went completely on its side," said witness Joshua Reiman.
FAA and NTSB officials are investigating.
The Chino Valley Fire Department also responded to the crash.
