PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Valley man, convicted of hitting a woman on a scooter and driving off, will spend more than a decade behind bars.

Judge Harriet Chavez sentenced James Edward Bellinger to 12 years in prison and five years intensive probation.

Bellinger pled guilty to manslaughter and hit-and-run crash causing death.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said on Jan. 11, 2013, a 37-year-old woman was heading southbound on 19th Avenue about 10 a.m. and as she got to Las Palmaritas, a 2005 Ford Explorer, driven by then 29-year-old Bellinger, turned left in front of her, causing the collision.

Bellinger fled to the area of 2500 W. Northern Ave. where he got out of his car and walked away, but was arrested soon after.

The woman was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition and later died.
